March is National Social Work Month
The month of March marks yet another year of celebrating and recognizing National Social Work Month. This year’s theme is “Social Workers Promoting Equity for a Stronger Canada.”
During Social Work Month, social workers across the country will reflect upon and celebrate the work they do to support and strengthen individuals, groups, and the communities in which they live and work.
Social work is a diverse profession and can be a powerful tool towards positive change in systems, communities and the lives of individuals, groups, and families.
While the type of work varies considerably across differing disciplines in which social workers practice (for example, child welfare, mental health, addiction services, justice, private practice, consulting, management, etc.) our code of ethics and professional values keeps us unified in what we believe and practice as a helping profession across all disciplines.
Social work within the Labrador Region is said to be challenging, complex and rewarding. As social workers we strive to keep up with forever changing and evolving community values, norms and best practice principles to provide the best service possible to the populations we serve.
As a helping profession we work closely with our broader community partners and leaders to help us, as social workers, make better informed decisions that will improve the quality of life and overall well-being of the individuals, families and groups we work with each day.
As we continue to move forward, let us as social workers take a moment to step back and reflect on the positive attributes of social work within this region. Let us promote our profession with pride and embrace the true meaning of being a part of a helping profession.
Throughout our social work careers we will face many challenges and dilemmas within the essential work we do. Therefore, we must take good care of ourselves to be steadfast in providing the best service possible to our clients and our communities that we serve each day.
